[plant morphology] Perilla frutescens
Herbs perennial, ca. 30 cm tall. Stem erect, square, usually unbranched, quadrangular, scabrous. Leaves opposite; petiolate; leaf blade oblong elliptic lanceolate, apex obtuse, base cordate, or suborbicular, margin serrate, rugose above, veins bristly. Flowers are whorled in several layers, most of them are integrated into cymes, and the top is densely capitate; calyx is bell shaped, 5-toothed, lobes with sharp spines at the apex; corolla is purplish red, simple lip shaped, upper lip round, entire, lower lip spreading downward, 3-lobed, with red spots; stamens are 4,2-strong; style bears ovary bottom, and the top is 2-lobed. Nutlets obovate, black, smooth. It blooms in summer.
It grows in tidal wetlands such as fields and ditches. There are wild plants all over the south of China.
