[plant morphology] Dioscorea opposita
Perennial grassy vines with sparse long bristles when young. Rhizome cylindrical, diameter 1-2 cm, surface yellow or gray brown, white section, less fibrous roots. Leaves alternate, palmately heart-shaped, 6-14 cm long, 5-11 cm wide, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate, margin 4-5-lobed, lower veins densely covered with white pubescence, basal veins 9-11; petiole long. The flowers are small, unisexual, dioecious; the male inflorescence is solitary or 2-3 clustered leaf axils; the male inflorescence has a stalk, usually 2-3 integrated into a small cyme; the inflorescence is 6-lobed, with 6 stamens, 3 anthers longitudinal and 3 transverse; the female inflorescence is spicate, solitary or 2-3 clustered leaf axils, with 40 or more flowers, 6 perianths and tongue shaped. Capsule obovate, brownish yellow and shiny, 3-winged, ca. 2.5 cm long, base narrowly rounded, middle concave. Seeds elliptic, with membranous wings.
It grows on grass slope, shrub edge and ditch edge. It is distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou.
[collection] in autumn and winter, the soil was removed, sliced and dried.
[chemical constituents] diosgenin was found in the rhizome of Zhaojue, Sichuan, and Lijiang, Yunnan, with a content of 1.58% and 0.5% respectively.
[flavor] pungent, warm.
Functions and indications: dry dampness, regulate spleen, strengthen tendons and bones.
