[source / prescription] this product is the dried root of Stellera chamaejasma L. In autumn, they are dug to remove impurities and dried in the sun.
[character] the product is spindle shaped, cone-shaped or long cylindrical, slightly curved, single or branched, with different length. There are aboveground stem residues on the head of root, with brown to tan surface, twisted longitudinal groove, transverse raised lenticels and lateral root marks. White soft fibers are exposed at the place where the cork peels off. It is light, tough, not easy to break, and its section is fibrous. The skin is white and the wood is light yellow. The taste is pungent.
[identification]
(1) The powder is yellow white. It shows light blue fluorescence under ultraviolet lamp (365 nm). Cork cells are yellowish brown, phloem parenchyma cells are round or irregular, with intercellular spaces. Reticulate duct is the main duct with a diameter of 30-50 μ m, and marginal pit duct is occasionally seen. The fibers are colorless and 7-15 μ m in diameter. The starch granules were single, round, helmet shaped, with indistinct lamina, umbilical spot or fissure shape, and 3-15 μ m in diameter.
(2) Take 5g of crude powder, add 20ml of ethanol, and refluxe in water bath for 1 hour. Concentrate the extract to 5ml, filter, take 1ml of filtrate, add a little magnesium powder and several drops of hydrochloric acid, heat it in water bath for a few minutes, and place it in magenta color.
(3) Take 1ml of the above filtrate, evaporate it in an evaporating dish, add 1ml of saturated acetone solution of boric acid and 1ml of acetone test solution of 10% citric acid, evaporate it slowly, and observe it under ultraviolet light (365 nm), showing yellow fluorescence.

It is pungent, warm and poisonous.
[function and indications] Qingre Jiedu, detumescence, diarrhea inflammation, stop ulcer, dispel putrefaction and generate muscle, boil ointment for internal use for Pandora, furuncle, carbuncle, scrofula; external use for stubborn tinea, ulcer.
[note] this product is one of the three poisons and should be taken with caution; it is forbidden for pregnant women.
[usage and dosage] 0.5-1g. Usually for external use.
[storage] store in a well ventilated and dry place.
