[plant morphology] Sophora japonica
Shrubs, up to 4 m tall, glabrous. 3 compound leaves, terminal leaflets lanceolate or broadly lanceolate, 4.5-9.7 cm long, 1.8-4 cm wide, lateral leaflets smaller; apical tapering to acute or short acuminate, base cuneate, sparsely covered with very short hairs above, sparsely covered with close pubescence below, dense hairs on midrib; petiole flat, 1.5-2.5 cm long; stipules lanceolate linear, 8 mm long. Raceme axillary; flowers greenish white, ca. 7 mm long; calyx campanulate, calyx teeth 2-lipped, upper 2-toothed, lower 3-toothed lanceolate; corolla butterfly shaped, flag petal elliptic, keel clawed; stamens 10, 2-bodied; pistil 1, ovary densely covered with silky hairs at suture. Pods 5-7 cm long, slightly curved, with short hairs extending and hooked, ventral suture constricted, pods 4-6, rectangular, 9-12 mm long and 3 mm wide. The flowering period is from July to September. The fruit period is from August to October.
It grows on grass slope or forest edge. It is distributed in Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, Taiwan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, etc.
