[plant morphology] Bromus
Annual herb, 30-100 cm high. The leaf sheath is covered with white hairs; the ligule is transparent and membranous, with cleft teeth at the top; the leaf blade is 5-30 cm long and 2-8 mm wide, with white hairs on both sides, sometimes glabrous below. Panicle, pendulous, 20 cm long, with 3-7 branches per node; 1-4 spikelets per branch near upper part; spikelets containing 7-14 florets, upper florets usually undeveloped, glumes lanceolate, with membranous margin, 3-5 veins of the first glume, 7-9 veins of the second glume, lemma elliptic, margin membranous, with 7-9 veins, apex with 2 cleft teeth, awn about 2 mm below; first lemma longer ; palea shorter than lemma, sparsely spined on ridge; stamens 3; ovary apically hairy. Caryopsis linear oblong, compressed, ventrally grooved, close to palea when mature. It is heading from May to July.
It grows on hillside, wilderness and roadside. It is distributed in the Yangtze and yellow river basins.
The seeds of this plant (Bromus sativus L.) are also used for medicinal purposes.
