[plant morphology] Polygonum pterygium
Perennial woody vines. The stem is several meters long, and the lower part is segmented. Light purplish red, upper part not segmented, green. Leaves alternate, heart-shaped triangular, or heart-shaped ovate, 4-8 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, apex caudal, base concave, both sides of the foot is ear shaped or round, entire, slightly hairy veins; petiole 3-8 cm long, red; with stipule sheath. Raceme axillary, flowers are simple; calyx yellowish green, ovoid, ca. 3 mm long, ca. 1.5 mm wide; stamens 8; ovary superior, stigma 3 forked. The fruit is triangular, 3-winged at the top, 3-horned at the base, 2-winged at the peduncle, with lanceolate membranous bracts below. The flowering period is summer and autumn.
It is wild under high mountains and dense forests or in grass on hillsides. It is distributed in Northwest China.

[herbal medicine] the root tubers are fleshy, irregular and of different sizes. The smaller ones are like fists, and the larger ones can be up to 30 cm in diameter.
