[plant morphology] Portulaca oleracea
Annual succulent herb, smooth and glabrous, 20-30 cm high. Stem cylindrical, supine or oblique upward, from the base of the four scattered, sunny surface often with light maroon or purple. Leaves alternate or opposite, petiole very short, leaves fleshy, obovate or spoon shaped, 1-3 cm long, 5-14 mm wide, apex obtuse, sometimes slightly absent, base broadly cuneate, entire, dark green above, dark red below. Flowers bisexual, small, yellow, usually 3-5, clustered branches, apical leaf axils; involucral bracts 4-5, triangular ovate; sepals 2, opposite, ovate, base connected with ovary; petals 5, obcordate, apex slightly concave; stamens 8-12, medicinal yellow; pistil 1, ovary semi inferior, 1-locular, style tip 4-6-lobed, forming linear stigma. Capsule short conic, brown, covered with cracks; seeds numerous, dark brown, surface with fine spots. The flowering period is from May to September. The fruit period is from June to October.
Born in the fields, wasteland and roadsides. It is distributed in most areas of China.

[clinical application] 1. Prevention of bacillary dysentery
Take fresh Portulaca oleracea stem and leaf, wash and chop, 1 jin of Portulaca oleracea, add 3 jin of water, fry 1 jin, filter. Adults take 70 ml three times a day for 2-7 days. Children take 60% purslane decoction, or cut purslane into wonton, steamed bread stuffing, or porridge; each jin of fresh purslane can be given to 15 children, once every other day. Some areas are also served as non-staple food for 10 consecutive days. After thousands of cases, the incidence rate of bacillary dysentery was significantly reduced.
② Treatment of bacillary dysentery, enteritis and dysentery carriers
The curative effect of Purslane on acute and chronic bacillary dysentery is similar to that of other dysentery drugs, such as sulfamidine and doxycycline. The effective rate of Purslane on acute cases is more than 90%, and the effective rate of Purslane on chronic cases is about 60%. Dosage: the safe range of effective dosage of Portulaca oleracea is large, although it is taken in large quantities, it is not toxic. However, one case of allergic skin rash was reported after taking 100% purslane decoction. Some people advocate taking 1 jin of fresh grass a day and halving hay. In clinical practice, 50% Decoction (hay), 50-100 ml each time, or 100% Decoction (fresh grass), 40-70 ml each time, 3-4 times a day, children's discretion, continuous 7-10 days as a course of treatment. No toxic reaction was found in chronic cases after 4 weeks. For intractable cases, Portulaca oleracea decoction can be diluted before retention irrigation
