[source] it is the seed or fruit of the leguminous plant Celastrus angustifolia.
[plant morphology] Celastrus angustifolia, also known as Celastrus angustifolia, Celastrus angustifolia and rattan.
Climbing shrubs perennial, thick. The branches are cylindrical, the epidermis is black green, and the twigs are sparse hairy. Leaflets 13-17, oblong lanceolate, 8-14 cm long and 3-4 cm wide, apex obtuse, entire, base slightly obtuse, with rust yellow pubescence below. Panicle axillary, 15-30 cm long; 2-5 flowers clustered on nodes of order axis; bracts ovate, less hairy; calyx bell shaped, 5-toothed, lobes triangular, light green, short hairy; corolla butterfly shaped, petals 5, purplish red; stamen 10; pistil 1, ovary superior, linear, style curved, stigma round. The pods are thick, woody, ovoid or oblong, yellowish gray green with spots, 1-5 seeds, reddish brown to dark brown. The flowering period is from March to April. The fruit period is from October to November.
It grows in streams, under open forests and shrubs. It is distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, etc.

[collection] the fruits were harvested after ripening in October. Remove the peel and dry the seeds.
[herbal medicine] the dried seeds are oblate and slightly kidney shaped; the seeds at both ends of the pod are round on one side and cut flat on the other; the seeds in the middle of the pod are cut flat on both sides; the length is about 4 cm and the thickness is about 3 cm. The surface is reddish brown to dark brown, glossy or with grayish white film. The umbilicus is located in the middle lumbar fossa. Cotyledons 2 pieces, thick, horny, easy to longitudinal crack; near the umbilicus around the irregular protuberance, so that the cotyledons longitudinal crack and uneven. It is weak in Qi, light in taste, and then has a penetrating numbness. It is better to have reddish brown skin, big skin and no moth.
It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou. In addition, it is also produced in Guangxi and Guangdong.
