[plant morphology] Vitex negundo (life saving bitter sea), also known as wuzhigan (preparation of raw herbs), Vitex negundo (yuhuanzhi), Vitex negundo, Vitex negundo (compendium of compendium), Vitex hepatica, mosquito firewood, wuzhifeng, mosquito firewood, bupleurum, tuchangshan, Matong and Yucao.

Deciduous shrubs or small trees, up to 6 meters high, with fragrant branches and leaves. New branches square, gray white, densely tomentose. Leaves opposite; palmately compound, county long petiole, usually 5, sometimes 3; leaflets elliptic ovate, 4-9 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide, middle leaflet largest, both sides reduced, apex long pointed, base cuneate, entire or shallowly undulate, or each side with 2-5 shallowly serrated, light green above, with sparse short hairs and fine oil spots. It is white below and densely covered with white fluff. Panicle, terminal; calyx campanulate, 5-toothed; corolla lavender, labiate, ca. 6 mm, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed; stamens 4, 2-strong; ovary 4-locular, style linear, stigma 2-lobed. Drupe, ovoid globose, brown, ca. 2. 5 mm in diam., lower part enclosed in calyx. The flowering period is from July to August. The fruit period is from August to September.

It contains several white seeds. It is fragrant, bitter and astringent, and the best is full, dry, few persistent calyx and no impurity.

The fruit of Vitex trifolia is also used as Vitex negundo in Tibet.
