Small shrubs, about 2 m high, with erect spinules. Pinnate compound leaves; leaflets 7-11, broadly elliptic or ovate, 6-20 mm long, 4-15 mm wide, apex obtuse or slightly acute, base suborbicular, margin sharply serrate, glabrous, grayish green below; petiole and rachis with sparse glandular hairs and small prickles; stipules wide, most attached to petiole, margin glandular hairs. Flowers solitary or several aggregated, bracted; pedicel 1.5-3 cm long, glabrous or glandular; flowers red or purplish red, 4-6 cm in diameter; calyx lobes ovate lanceolate, entire, apex caudate; petals obovate. Fruit ovate, 1.5-2 cm long, dark red.
It grows in the shrub on the hillside. Distributed in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Anhui, Zhejiang and other places.
