[plant morphology] Basella

Succulent and glabrous grass vines. It can be several meters long and has branches. Stems green or lavender. Leaves simple, alternate; petiolate, slightly fleshy and thick; ovate, 3-12 cm long, apex acuminate and obtuse, base microcardiate or decurrent, entire. Spikes axillary, solitary, 5-20 cm long, flowers about 4 mm long; bracts 1, linear, 1-2 mm long, under flowers; bracts 2, ovate, less than 0.5 mm long, on both sides; sepals pale red, base connate, apex 5-lobed, lobes obtuse, erect; petals absent; stamens 5. Pistil 1, ovary globose, style 3, base connate, stigma oblong. Berries ovate or globose, dark purple, 5-6 mm long. The flowering period is from spring to early winter.

It is cultivated all over the country.

[chemical constituents] the leaves contain dextran, mucopolysaccharide (including L-arabinose, D-galactose, L-rhamnose and uronic acid), β - carotene and other carotenoids and organic acids. It also contains saponins and iron.
