Deciduous climbing shrubs. Underground stem massive, stem sparsely small barb thorn or no thorn. Leaves leathery, alternate, narrowly ovate or ovate elliptic, 3-7 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide, apex short pointed, base round or microcordate, basal veins 5; petiole sheathlike, reddish brown; stipules broadly auricular. Umbel axillary, total pedicel with 2 florets; perianth lobes 6, separated. Berries globose, blue black. The flowering period is May.
Born on the sunny hillside. Distributed in Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, Shaanxi and other places.
The rhizome of this plant is sometimes used as millet in Shaanxi Province.
