[plant morphology] wax gourd

Annual climbing herbs. The stem is long, strong and slightly square, densely covered with yellowish brown bristles and tendrils branched. The leaves are broad ovate or nearly kidney shaped, 15-30 cm long, 5-7-angled or lobed, apex pointed, base heart-shaped, margin serrate, both sides coarsely hairy, veins reticulate. Flowers unisexual, monoecious, solitary in leaf axils; male pedicel 5-15 cm long, calyx tubular, 5-lobed, lobes triangular ovate, margin serrate, corolla yellow, 5-lobed to base, 6-10 cm in diameter, petals abducted, 3-5 cm long, stamens 5, united into 3, of which 2 are wider, anthers 2-locular, the other one is narrower, anthers 1-locular; female petiole short, less than 5 cm long Ovary inferior, oblong, densely pilose, stigma 3-lobed, slightly twisted. The flesh of the bottle gourd is good. Oval or oblong oval, sometimes nearly round, 30-60 cm long, 20-35 cm in diameter; light green peel, white waxy powder on the surface, white and thick flesh: cylindrical peduncle, with longitudinal groove. Most seeds are white or yellow white; ovate or long ovate, edge usually with an edge, some cultivars have smooth edge. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from June to August.
