[plant morphology]

Cockscomb flower, also known as cockscomb amaranth.

Annual herbs, 60-90 cm high, glabrous. Stem erect, stout. The leaves are simple, alternate, oblong to ovate lanceolate, 5-12 cm long and 3.5-6.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, entire, base gradually narrowed into petioles. The spikes are variable, growing at the apex of the stem or at the end of the branches, often cocklike, with purple, red, light red, yellow or variegated colors; the flowers are dense, with 3 bracts for each flower; the perianth is 5, broadly lanceolate, 5-8 mm long, dry membranous, transparent; the stamen is 5, and the lower part of the filament is combined into a ring; the pistil is 1, and the stigma is 2-lobed. When the utricle becomes hot, it splits transversely and contains 2 to several small black seeds. The flowering period is from July to September. The fruit period is from September to October.

It is an ornamental plant cultivated in most parts of the country.

It is inflorescence with short stem, similar to cockscomb, or spicate or curly. The upper part of the crown is densely covered with linear villi, i.e. unopened florets, which are generally dark in color, with red, light red, white and other colors; the lower part of the middle part is densely covered with many florets, each floret has a membranous gray white bract and perianth. Capsule dehiscent; seeds black, glossy. There is no breath, and the taste is light. The white cockscomb with big flat and bright color is better than the red one.
