Perennial herbs. The roots are thick and brown. Stem erect, cylindrical, hollow, less branched, 30-40 cm high. Single leaf opposite; ovate or oblong, 3-9 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, apex obtuse or slightly pointed, base sessile, slightly amplexicaul, veins raised below. Flowers terminal, golden yellow, single or several synthetic cymes, about 2 cm in diameter; sepals 5, oblong; petals 5, often oblique; stamens extremely numerous; ovary often 3-5-locular, style apex 5-lobed.
