[synonyms] yangcimi (Northern History), caomi, geidunluo (the collection of Materia Medica), citang, luotuocitang (Xinjiang medicinal materials), yangtaksiker (Uygur name).

[source] it is a sugar granule condensed from the secretory liquid of the leaves of leguminous plant Alhagi.

[plant morphology] camel thorn, also known as sheep thorn (Northern History).

Thorny deciduous shrub. Branches glabrous or subglabrous, grayish green, densely needled, nearly at right angles to branches, 1.2-2.5 cm long. Leaves solitary at the base of spines and branches, broadly obovate, 1.5-3 cm long, apex obtuse, entire, hard leathery, with short flat hairs on both sides; stipules small, exfoliative. Inflorescence axillary; pedicel spiny, with 1-7 flowers, red, 8-10 mm long; pedicel short, 1 bract at base, 2 bracts at base of calyx; calyx campanulate, 2-5 mm long, calyx teeth 5, glabrous; corolla protruding out of calyx, petal obovate, keel apex slightly obtuse; stamens 9 and 1 into 2 groups; ovary linear, sessile, style filiform, incurved, stigma capitate. Pods beaded, falcate, unbroken, up to 2.5 cm long, with 1-5 seeds. The flowering period is from June to July.

It is distributed in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and other places.

[medicinal material] the sugar granules are small spherical, yellow white, sticky and sweet. The best color is yellow and white, and there is no mud and sand impurity in branches and leaves.

It is produced in Xinjiang.

[chemical composition] the aboveground part (dry) collected at flowering stage contained vitamin c-110 mg%, carotene 10 mg%, vitamin K, a small amount of vitamin B1, ursolic acid 0.30% and flavanol 0.23%. Dried root contains 80 mg% vitamin C, 8 mg% carotene and 0.75% ursolic acid.

This product contains alkaloids in the preliminary test.
