Erect herbs, 10-30 cm high. Stems fragile, glabrous, quadrangular. Leaves opposite, long ovate or lanceolate, 3-10 cm long, 1-3.5 cm wide, apex long acuminate, margin serrate, 3-5 main veins, long stalk. The flowers are bisexual, purplish red, with several clustered branches or leaf axils; the calyx tube has 4 wings, 4 teeth on the upper part, and a small bundle of fine hairs under the calyx teeth; the corolla has 4 petals, ovate; the stamens are 8, equal; the anthers are long elliptic, with a distance at the base of the connective; the ovary is semi inferior, 4-locular, and many ovules. Capsule with 4 large scales at the top. Seeds numerous, obovate, with prominent protuberances. The flowering period is July.
It grows under the forest or at the edge of the ditch. It is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan, etc.
