Herbs perennial, erect, with stolons at the base and screw shaped tubers at the end. The stem is 30-60cm high, square, quadrangular, with long inverted bristles. Leaves opposite; leaves ovate or oblong, about 3-10 cm long, 1.5-6 cm wide, apex acute or long pointed, base heart-shaped or nearly round, margin serrate, both sides villous; petiole 1-5 cm long. Bracts lanceolate, villous on both sides. There are 2-6 rounds of flowers, 3-6 flowers in each round, forming a discontinuous panicle raceme, terminal at the branch tip; the base of petiole has a pair of exfoliative setiform bracteoles; calyx is bell shaped, glandular pilose, 5-toothed, with needle tip at the tooth end; corolla is reddish purple, glandular hair is exposed, with hairy ring in corolla tube, upper lip is erect and slightly reflexed, lower lip is flat, with 3 lobes; stamens are 4,2-strong , extending beyond corolla and beneath upper lip; style apically 2-lobed. Nutlets are black. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from June to July.
