Zhao huaiye
Zhao huaiye (? - 1894), also known as Zhao Huaiyi, is named Shaoshan and Xiaochuan. He was born in Hefei, Anhui Province. Huaiziying, the commander of Huaijun, suppressed the Nien uprising from Liu Mingchuan in his early years.
Personal life
In 1894, during the Sino Japanese War of 1894, the Ming army was divided into two groups. In October of the same year, Li Hongzhang ordered to recruit six battalions, called "huaizi battalions", to garrison Dalian and serve as the governor of Jin Dynasty. On November 6, the enemy troops invaded Jinzhou (now Jinxian County, Liaoning Province). He personally went to the Dalian Bay Wharf to supervise the transportation of luggage, sundries and military supplies across the sea, preparing to flee. The generals in front of him repeatedly asked for help. Zhao Junjun, on the pretext of "guarding the fort", held his ground, causing the front-line soldiers to lose. When Jinzhou fell, he abandoned the fort and led his team to Lushun. Then he abandoned Lushun and was dismissed.

Transfer Dalian Bay Fort
On July 23, 1894, the Japanese army sank, injured and captured the ships of the Qing army in the waters off Toyo Island, Yashan, Korea. The Qing government believed that this incident was an undeclared war between Japan and the Qing court, which broke out in the Sino Japanese War of 1894. In order to deal with this sudden situation, the Qing government dispatched troops and deployed troops. Therefore, in September 1894, Liu Shenglin was transferred to Dadonggou. When Dadonggou, only six sentries were left to guard the Dalian fort, and the defense was very empty. In order to guard Lushun, the Qing government transferred Zhao huaiye army to Dalian Bay fort. Dalian Bay fort is located on the flank of Jinzhou, the throat of Lushun back road. It is close to the Yellow Sea and has a dangerous terrain. It is a must for military strategists. The fort was built in 1887. The construction of the fort adopted the most advanced military technology and style at that time and took seven years to complete. Upon completion, there were 6 artillery stations, which erected more than 120 cannons, field guns and commercial artillery guns. They had already surpassed Lushun in the lethal force of artillery.
After Zhao huaiye came to the fort of Dalian Bay, he knew the importance of the strategic position of Dalian Bay. He was immediately ordered by Li Hongzhang to recruit six battalions of new soldiers, which were stationed in heshangdao, laolongshan, Huangshan, Nanguanling and Sujiatun, to supplement the emptiness of defense of Dalian Bay. The Qing government promoted him to a divisive army. Soon after, Xu Bangdao led the 1st Battalion of the horse team, 1st Battalion of the artillery team and 2nd Battalion of the new recruits to the fort of Dalian Bay and cooperated with Zhao huaiye to defend Dalian Bay.
Military grain private property
On October 24, after landing at Huayuankou, Zhuanghe, the Japanese second army turned to Jinzhou and Lushun. When Zhao huaiye learned that the Japanese army was approaching, he was terrified. He immediately appealed to Li Hongzhang and asked for more troops. Li Hongzhang reprimanded him, saying: "Lushun's soldiers are single, and they are in a tight situation. How can they be divided across the Bay? It can be said that they are confused and timid. You and others only guard the barracks and set up more land mines on your way. You are not responsible for guarding the city." After Zhao huaiye was reprimanded, he didn't want to step up his preparations for the war. Instead, he sent people to transport military supplies and uniforms to Yantai to exchange them for silver and turn them into private property. Then they shipped their families and gold and silver to Yantai.
Flee to Lushun
When the Japanese army was approaching Jinzhou, Xu Bangdao thought that Jinzhou was related to the safety of Lushun. If Jinzhou was lost, Lushun could not be guaranteed. Therefore, he suggested to Zhao huaiye to divide troops to attack and stop the Japanese army. However, Zhao seized Li Hongzhang's words of "each guarding the camp" and refused to agree. He said: "I am ordered by the central hall to guard the fort and not fight back. If you want to go to chenziwo to resist the enemy, you must ask for an order." Xu Bangdao repeatedly asked Zhao CAI to send battalion officer Zhou Dingchen and two sentry infantry to reinforce the situation that Jinzhou's defense forces were too thin. At the critical moment of Jinzhou's battle preparation, Xu Bangdao sent people to look for him everywhere, but he supervised the transportation of his own property on the wharf. On November 6, when he heard that the Japanese army was about to fight, he was so scared that he did not fire a single shot. He abandoned the Dalian Bay battery group and led more than 3000 horsemen to flee to Lushun.

General yamadi Yuanzhi, head of the first division of the Japanese army, once thought it would be difficult to capture Dalian Bay. In order to reduce casualties, he asked the Japanese joint fleet to assist in the battle and destroy the Fort Group in Dalian Bay by sea and land. When the attack began on November 7, only a few soldiers of the Qing army fired a few guns from afar and then all of them withdrew. The Japanese army seized the Dalian Bay Fort lightly and obtained more than 100 guns, 2.46 million shells, more than 600 new German rifles, 33.81 million bullets, horses, bank accounts, grain and unopened fast guns. These equipment became the material support for the Japanese army to capture Lushun in the future. From November 9, Dalian Bay Wharf became the logistics supply transfer station for the Japanese army to attack Lushun. Previously, the Japanese army cleared the mines in Dalian Bay according to the mine distribution map left by the Qing army. Because Zhao huaiye fled before fighting in the Lushun defense war, at the end of the war in 1894, the Qing government captured him, handed him over to the Ministry of punishment, and seized his property.
