Liu Zhi

Liu Zhi (? - 1335-1338) was a writer of Sanqu in Yuan Dynasty. In the middle of the word, it's called fuzhai. Ningxiang, Shizhou (now Zhongyang, Shanxi) people. His father, Liu Yanwen, served as a recorder in Chenzhou and a magistrate in HUAIJI, Guangzhou.

Liu Zhi (? - 1335-1338) was a writer of Sanqu in Yuan Dynasty. In the middle of the word, it's called fuzhai. Ningxiang, Shizhou (now Zhongyang, Shanxi) people. His father, Liu Yanwen, served as a recorder in Chenzhou and a magistrate in HUAIJI, Guangzhou. During his exile in Changsha, Liu Zhi met Yao Sui with his articles in Qing Dynasty. Yao Sui was recommended as an official of Hunan Xianfu, and later served as Yongxin Prefecture magistrate, Henan provincial governor, Hanlin Daizhi, Zhejiang provincial governor, etc. In his later years, he was poor and could not be buried. Wang Zhenren (Wang meisuo) received him and buried him in Deqing. His Sanqu can be seen in the collections of "snow in spring", "Taiping Yuefu", "Yuefu Qun Yu".

Appreciative Remarks

The famous divertimento of the Yuan Dynasty (Zhenggong · duanzhenghao), Shanggao jiansi, was composed by Liu Shizhong. But there are different opinions about the author. One is Liu Shizhong of Shizhou, the other is Liu Shizhong of Guhong (now Nanchang, Jiangxi). Gu Hong Liu Shizhong was recorded in the sequel to the book of recording ghosts. His life is unknown, and his time should be later than that of Liu Zhi in Shizhou. Others think that Liu Shizhong in Guhong is Liu Shizhong in Shizhou.

Shanggao jiansi is an important work of Sanqu in Yuan Dynasty. Qiantao reflects the drought in Jiangxi Province during the Zhizheng period, and truly describes the miserable scene of starving people eating wild vegetable bark, the dead filling streets and alleys, and the children being separated, and the suckling children being thrown into the Yangtze River. The work also shows that there were not only natural disasters, but also man-made disasters. They colluded with officials, exploited the people while the disaster happened, and used the "granary" to enrich their own pockets, thus aggravating the disaster. The latter set states the long-standing disadvantages of the banknote law of the Yuan Dynasty, and the collusion between the officials and the merchants, which makes it possible to rectify the banknote law. These two divertimento truly and profoundly reveal the decadent darkness of the political and economic system of the Yuan Dynasty. This kind of works is rare in Yuan Dynasty Sanqu, so it has an important position. However, the author has too many praise for Gao jiansi and the latter takes an incorrect attitude towards the peasant uprising.

In terms of art, the two divertimento are simple and plain in language and detailed in description, but sometimes they are not so simple. Due to the need of content, the divertimento breaks the limitation of the length of Sanqu, and expands the scope of the subject matter of Sanqu.
