Ma Long began to study table tennis in Anshan, Liaoning Province at the age of 5. In 2001, he was discovered by coach Guan Hua'an and brought to Beijing for further study. In 2003, he joined the national team. In 2004, he won the men's singles championship in the World Youth Championships. In 1993, Malone's father let 5-year-old Malone learn to play table tennis because table tennis can not only "exercise", but also "not easy to get hurt".
In 1999, Malone entered Liaoning sports school and studied under Wang Jun, the 34th world table tennis champion.
In 2001, the 13-year-old Malone was once faced with the situation of being eliminated by the provincial team. However, when the coach of Beijing Xicheng sports school went to Liaoning to select seedlings, the coach Guan Hua'an took a fancy to Malone and brought him from Liaoning to Beijing to continue to learn table tennis.
