Character evaluation
Wu Yonggang's concern for human nature is unfolded through a narrative mode of dual structure, which corresponds to Murray Stein's "daily conscience" and "monthly conscience", among which "monthly conscience" represents Wu Yonggang's emotional orientation, that is, the pursuit of perfect righteousness. This kind of emotional orientation leads Wu Yonggang to explore in the aspects of picture narration, metaphor montage, light and shadow modeling and film tone, making him one of the directors with modern consciousness and intellectual flavor in the history of Chinese film (review of contemporary film). Wu Yonggang's realism first of all respects the reality of life and describes life with its original appearance, so it has the characteristics of objectivity and realism. The objective realism of life is not mechanically copied, but requires the creator's thinking about life, condensing the creator's emotion, love, tendency and hope, that is, emphasizing the creator's subjective grasp of life. This is Wu Yonggang's basic understanding and advocate of Realism (film art review).
