Shen Xiangyu
Shen Xiangyu (October 18, 1926 - April 11, 2006), Korean film producer and director.
Shen Xiangyu was born in Qingjin city in the northeast of Korean Peninsula and studied in Tokyo Art University. Cui Yinkui's "long live freedom" is Shen Xiangyu's first work with participation, and also the first film of South Korea since Japan's independence.
Main works
Cui Yinkui's "long live freedom" is Shen Xiangyu's first work with participation, and also the first film of South Korea since Japan's independence. In the golden age of Korean films from 1950 to 1960, he directed more than two sets of films every year on average. He also set up a production company and made more than 300 films during the 1960's.
In the 1970s, Shen's career declined because of the severe censorship of Korean films and the government's intervention. In 1978, its production company was closed to then President Park Chung Hee.
In 1979, Shen Xiangyu and his wife Cui Yinji were kidnapped by North Korean spies. The incident was planned by Kim Jong Il himself to develop the film industry for North Korea. However, the North Korean authorities denied the kidnapping charges and claimed that they came to North Korea voluntarily. Shortly after they were kidnapped, they tried to escape, but failed, and were detained by the authorities. In 1983, they were released from prison and the reasons for their abduction were learned.
When Shen Xiangyu was kidnapped by North Korea, he was in charge of seven sets of films under Kim Jong Il's executive supervision. The most famous work is the monster film "Pulgasari", similar to Japan's "Godzilla", which implies the influence of capitalism without any restrictions. Eight years after Shen Xiangyu and Cui Yinji were kidnapped, in 1986, they took the opportunity to go to the Berlin Film Festival to escape to Vienna, and then went to the United States to seek political asylum.
Shen Xiangyu once directed a film under the name of Simon sheen in the United States. He returned to South Korea in 1994 to continue production. He died of hepatitis complications in 2006. His last posthumous work was "winter story". Before his death, he was shooting the TV series Genghis Khan.

Commemoration of later generations
April 11, 2009 is the third anniversary of the death of the famous Korean director Shin sang Yu. From April 8 to 19, the Korean Academy of image and information will hold a commemorative activity of "love, love, love of film" in the Seoul theme cinema KOFA. At that time, 16 films directed by Shin sang Yu after 1970 will be shown. Including "filial daughter Shen Qing", "farewell", "prison break", "salt", the Hollywood work "Ninja", and the representative work "winter story" of returning to the Korean film industry.
On the 11th, director Shen Xiangyu's colleagues, younger filmmakers and family members will also hold a memorial ceremony at the theme cinema.
In addition, 10 representative works of director Shen Xiangyu will be shown free on the website of Korea Academy of image and information in April.
