Character evaluation
Zhang Zi'en is a Confucian general in the field of Chinese film. No matter what the theme or type of his films and TV plays are, he will put a unique cultural meaning between the lines of his works. Even in the social context of film commercialization, his films still maintain a unique cultural style. However, at the same time, he is not a director who retreats and evades in the surging economy, but a film artist who bravely advances in the tide of the times. Among the film directors in the mainland, Zhang Zien was the first one who dabbled in martial arts films. He advocates that the actions in martial arts movies "should be beautiful or humorous, which is the best quality. Martial arts movies should take the dance like beautiful actions of martial arts, just like rhythmic gymnastics.". The martial arts movies directed by him will integrate more cultural connotations, rather than the violent catharsis from the beginning to the end.
