Character evaluation
Compared with most directors in Taiwan, Wei Desheng is quite grassroots. He didn't even go to college, nor did he specially study movies, and knew little about the so-called masterpieces. During the financial crisis and the depression of the people in Taiwan, with the perseverance and humor of the little people to survive, let the people regain their recognition of this land. In just two months, Wei Desheng surpassed Jackie Chan and Ang Lee to become the best-selling director of Taiwan's Chinese language films for more than 60 years. He suddenly became a world-renowned Chinese film director (Chinese Language Film Media Awards) from a playwright who lived in a muddle. Wei Desheng is full of ideal personality and has the courage to adhere to his own concept, which leads to a small number of outsourcing works. However, the details of Wei Desheng's works directed and shot by himself can still clearly see the track of Wei Desheng's continuous self breakthrough and self growth (Chengdu Daily review).
Character controversy
Since Wei Desheng became famous, his films (Cape Seven in 2008, Cedric bale in 2011 and Kano in 2014) all involve the history of the Japanese occupation era in Taiwan, which has caused some people to accuse Wei Desheng of "flattering Japan". Critics' comments often deviate from the content of the film and tend to struggle for political position. Seven members of the self proclaimed "anti independence historical front" criticized Japan for flattering without seeing a film; anonymous people pretended to be different identities and published film reviews, which showed signs of such targeted attacks.
