Character experience
Li Kai was born in Changchun in 1954. After graduating from junior high school (16 years old), he worked as a worker in Changchun No.2 nonferrous metal smelter. For two years, he worked as a foreman and a worker in electrolytic copper workshop.
In 1973, Li Kai was recommended by Changchun No.2 nonferrous metal smelter to take part in the college entrance examination. In the same year, he entered the Mathematics Department of Jilin University.
In 1977, he received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Jilin University.
In 1981, he received a master's degree in computer science from University of science and technology of China.
In 1983, he received a master's degree in computer science from Yale University.
In 1986, he received a doctor's degree in computer science from Yale University. After graduation, he worked in Princeton University. Later, he was a tenured professor in the Department of electrical engineering and computer science of Princeton University.
In 1998, he was elected acmfellow.
In 2001, he co founded DataDomain.
In 2011, he was elected ieeefellow.
In 2012, he was elected as an academician of the American Academy of engineering; in the same year, he was selected as a leading talent in Guangdong Province and a leader in Cyberspace Security discipline of Jinan University.
In November 2017, he was elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering.
Main achievements
Achievements in scientific research
In the mid-1980s, Li Kai proposed computer distributed shared memory (DSM) technology, and proposed a directory based consistency algorithm for solving shared virtual memory on loosely coupled multiprocessors, which created a new research direction of computer system architecture. In 2012, his original paper was selected into acmsigops Hall of fame.
In the mid-1990s, in order to improve the communication performance of computer cluster, remote direct memory access mechanism was proposed, which made a key contribution to RDMA, Infiniband and other technologies. It was widely used in high-performance computing, data center network and other fields, and became an industrial standard.
In 2001, he co founded DataDomain with two partners and led the team to develop the world's first commercial product of data duplication storage system. This kind of storage system can store more orders of magnitude of backup and archive data than traditional methods, and can effectively transfer data to remote disaster recovery data center through Wan, which revolutionizes how to design storage system and how to store backup data, and opens up a new market with a scale of billions of dollars. DataDomain was listed on Nasdaq, which was regarded as a typical case of "disruptive innovation" by the computer industry.
In 2007, he cooperated with Li Feifei, a colleague from Princeton University, to launch the Imagenet project, which established the largest image recognition knowledge base in the world, and promoted the revolutionary development of artificial intelligence based on deep learning.
According to the official website of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019, Professor Li Kai's most influential thesis awards in three core fields of computer science include the most influential thesis of ISCA in 25 years, the most influential thesis of pldi in 20 years and the best thesis of VLDB in 10 years.
