Huang Manli once studied in pellegross women's normal school. In 1930, she was admitted to the acting class of Shanghai Jinan film company and took part in the silent film 24 swordsmen of the river. In 1932, he joined the Hong Kong Branch of Lianhua film company and starred in three silent films, including the sound of cuckoo in ancient temple. In 1937, he married director Xie Yizhi and in 1940, he starred in the Cantonese film "tears in the sea of people", which won high praise. Up to the 1970s, more than 300 films were performed, and many characters with different personalities were created. The main films include "song of life", "every family", "home", "spring dawn in a dangerous building", "wilderness", "madwoman" and "motherly heart".

She formed the "Twelve beauties" with Jinlan who had made friendship with Chen Pimei, Li Zhuozhuo, Li Qianping, Xu Yi, Ganlu, Zheng Wenxia, Li Yueqing, Ma Xiaoying, Rong Yuyi, Li Wen, Gao Weilan (Mrs. Lu Dun).

In 1952, he joined in the founding of Zoomlion film company. He once co sponsored and organized the South China film workers association of Hong Kong with Hong Kong Progressive film workers, and served as the chairman of the Association for two terms. In 1971, he joined TVB as an artist and took part in the production of "choice", "wind and cloud", "family love" and other dramas. In addition to acting as a villain, she also played many roles as a loving mother, such as Chun Hui and little woman. She joined Li Li's TV in 1976, returned to TVB in 1979, and retired in 1987.

In the 1990s, Huang Manli suffered from Alzheimer's disease and was admitted to an old people's home with her husband. In 1995, she was awarded the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. Chow Yun Fat personally went to the old people's home and handed it to her. She died in the evening of April 8, 1998.

In the 1940s, Huang Manli was already a man of the hour in the South China film circle. He won the reputation of "the master of tragedy" for his superb acting skills and profound cultivation. After the restoration of China, Huang Manli took part in "demobilized tears" for four or seven years, and other works, such as "bear to abandon the pillow" and "keep the clouds open to see the moon", all aimed at praising the greatness of maternal love or pleading injustice for women with grievances. Those who play opposite Mary are often fake and true. Even the set is full of sadness, which makes the people behind the scenes shed tears of sympathy. Wu Chufan, Zhang Ying, Bai Yan, Hong Xiannu, Mei Qi, Xiao Yanfei, ziluolian and so on are the main actors in her plays.

Huang Manli is highly respected and welcomed by the younger generation in the TV circle. For example, Li Siqi said that she is a very loving old man during the interview. Zheng Yuling also mentioned that sister Mary has a strong memory and can act without a script. Among them are Zheng Wenxia, Su xingxuan and Zhuang Wenqing.

From 1930 to 1966, Huang Manli starred in more than 300 films. Her husband Xie Yizhi was also a director and filmmaker. Since their marriage in 1937, they have been a model couple in front of and behind the scenes. Until Huang Manli died, Xie Yizhi was still at the side of the sickbed.
