Wucun
Wu Cun (1904-1972), formerly known as Wu Shijie and pseudonym Shi Xun, was born in Xiamen, Fujian Province. He was a famous filmmaker in Shanghai in 1930s and 1940s. He was a member of the CPPCC National Committee and a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC Shaanxi Provincial Committee. He died in Xi'an in 1972 at the age of 68.
Early experience
Wu Cun was born in Xiamen in 1904. He was one of the main actors of Xiamen popular education society in 1920s. When he was young, he often acted in "civilized drama". After graduating from Xiamen University, he began to publish his works in 1921. After 1925, he became the editor in chief of Xiamen sound daily supplement. In 1930, he was favored by Shanghai Fudan film company and went to Shanghai as a director. He edited "blood flower and tears" He has been the director of Shanghai Fudan, Lianhua, star, Guohua, Jinxing, Xinhua, Cathay Pacific and other film companies. Later, he went to Nanyang and worked as the director of many film companies in Indonesia and Singapore. During his stay in Shanghai, he married Qian Jincai, an industrialist in Shanghai, and had three sons and one daughter.
Wu Cun was born in Fujian gentry family. When he was five months old, his family moved to Xiamen. When he was in primary school, he fell in love with the puppet show in Xiamen. Since then, he has a special preference for puppet show and performing arts. At the age of 15, he began to love photography and music. At the same time, he joined the drama club and took part in various performances. He also tried to write his own script.
Acting experience
In 1927, his family relatives set up a film company in Shanghai and invited Wu Cun to develop in Shanghai, which led him to the idea of going to Shanghai beach. Three years later, Wu Cun left for Shanghai to work as a director in Fudan film company. In 1931, Wu Cun wrote and directed his first work, the shadow of blood and tears, to expose the evils of the warlords. His budding talent has attracted the attention of people in the circle. Since then, his works of editing and directing have been presented like Yongquan, and he will write songs for the film when necessary, showing his versatility. In the 22nd year of the Republic of China, he was employed by Shanghai Lianhua film company to edit and direct the film wind.
From 23 to 26 years of the Republic of China, he worked in Shanghai Star Film Company, directing and producing "falling flower season", "flower of spring", "goddess of wealth", "forever smile" and "thousand gold". During the period, he cooperated with famous directors and screenwriters Zhang Shichuan, Cheng Bugao and Shen Xiling to direct the feature film "daughter Jing", and cooperated with Zhang Shichuan and Zheng Zhengqiu to direct "loyal soul". Since the 27th year of the Republic of China, he has successively edited and directed peach news, bigamy, night of terror, Wu Song and Pan Jinlian, Meng Jiangnu, song old tears, new hell, Wang Baochuan (the first and second episodes), black heaven, Su Sanyan history, Tianya singer and Li Xiangjun, among which more than half of the films were written by him. Most of these films reflect the social reality through the fate of the characters. In the 30 years of the Republic of China, he wrote and directed "spring and autumn of isolated island" and other films with the theme of Japanese encirclement of Shanghai concession. On the eve of the Pacific War, he went to Indonesia and Singapore. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, he engaged in film production business in Hong Kong. In the 37th year of the Republic of China, Wu Cun returned to Shanghai and directed Liu Lang Wen Ying for Shanghai Datong film company. At that time, many famous movie stars such as Hu Die and Zhou Xuan cooperated with him many times, and he enjoyed a good reputation in Shanghai.
One of Wu Cun's most important works is forever smile, which reveals the darkness and injustice of the society at that time by depicting the short and tragic life of singer Lu Yuhua. The film, starring the movie queen Hu Die, has been extremely popular since its release. Before he started his career as a director, Wu Cun was an amateur photographer. Therefore, in 1937, time life commented, "Wu Cun's directing technique is not so brilliant, but his artistic accomplishment and photographic experience are quite rich." His works are famous for their elegance and beauty, giving the citizens of Shanghai a sense of beauty at that time. This is somewhat similar to Director Zhang Yimou.
Main works
After liberation, Wucun successively served as director of Changjiang film studio, Changling film studio, Shanghai Film Studio and Beijing Film Studio. In 1953, he served as head of China Puppet Art Troupe. In 1956, he joined the Chinese Writers Association. Later, he was affected by the anti rightist movement. In 1958, he was transferred to Xi'an Film Studio as director and participated in the production of "Tianshan song", "drought song" and other films. He has written many screenplays, such as "new hell", "blood debt", "bowangsuo", "second hometown", "living like a year", puppet plays "duckling", "happy bear", "living Scarecrow", "Fox's tail", "deer", etc.

Wu Cun is also an excellent ci writer. With years of musical accomplishment, Wu Cun has written countless lyrics before. His words are simple, clear and catchy. From 1937 to 1941, Wu Cun consciously focused his creation on film songs, including song tears, Tianya singer, black heaven, Su San Yan Shi and other song and dance films.
