Wooden drum dance is a folk dance popular among the Miao, Yi and Wa people in Southwest China, which is performed by beating wooden drum. Generally, wooden drum is a part of the large-scale sacrificial activities participated by all ethnic groups. Wooden drum is regarded as the symbol of ethnic groups. The sacrificial activities with beating and jumping wooden drum as the core are full of strong meanings of ancestor worship and nature worship, and have distinct characteristics of primitive culture.
Wood drum dance is a popular folk dance of Miao people in Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. There are mainly two kinds of wood drum dance: anti Pai wood drum dance and Shidong and Gedong wood drum dance. The development of dance adopts a progressive way, gradually pushing the plot to the climax. Each plot has a clear hierarchy and a natural transition. The actors sing and dance at the same time. They move in all five bodies. They shake their hands on the same side and step on two or four beats. The dance is bold and unrestrained, free and graceful. The head, hands and feet are open and close, and the swing range is wide. Reverse row wood drum dance is composed of five drum chapters: "Niu gaodou", "Niu zhaxia", "Xia Difu", "Gao zhaxia" and "zhaxia". It adopts such playing techniques as click, joint attack and staggered percussion. The drums are well arranged and the rhythm is bright. It is organically combined with dance.
