Brief introduction of Miao Flower Festival
Applicant: Anshun City, Guizhou Province
The Miao flower jumping Festival is a folk activity held by the Miao people in Guizhou Province to wish good weather, abundant grain and prosperity of six animals. Every year, more than 50000 people take part in the flower jumping Festival on the slope, among which the flower jumping festival held in Wayao Village of Anshun City is the largest.
The preliminary work of the flower jumping activity started on the sixth day of the first month. First, under the leadership of the respected Zhailao, a flower tree was made up of many kinds of evergreen branches and handed over to the householder who gave birth to a child after picking up the flower tree last year. The householder then carried the flower tree from home to the top of the mountain with the sound of the suona. On the seventh day of the first lunar month, the festival of Tiaohua is coming. Miao men and women from all over the country gather at Tiaohua slope. Unmarried young men play Lusheng in women's clothes; married young men play Lusheng with fans and quilts on their backs, hanging silver ornaments, embroidery and other items on the quilts, and playing Lusheng in activities; children play Tiaohua with fans on their backs. On the afternoon of the ninth day of the first lunar month, after dancing flowers, couples who have been married for many years and have not had children receive the flowers and trees at home for worship. If young men and women meet each other in flower dancing activities, the man can ask someone to propose marriage to the woman's home.
The Miao flower jumping Festival is an indispensable part of the Miao people's life. As a national festival, it has played a positive role in promoting national unity and social harmony. Nowadays, with the change of Miao youth's living habits and value orientation, people's enthusiasm to participate in flower dancing activities is also declining. In this situation, the cultural connotation and practice of the flower skipping custom are disappearing and need to be protected.
