The traditional woodblock watermark technique of "carving image on wood, printing plain paper" originated from the ancient woodblock printing in China and is an important part of Chinese traditional culture. As early as the Tang Dynasty, woodblock watermark technology has been quite mature. Since the song and Yuan Dynasties, woodblock watermark illustrations have been popular in books, and after the Ming Dynasty, this trend has flourished. At the end of Ming Dynasty, the complex overprinting techniques such as "fan plate" and "Gong Hua" were widely used, and the woodblock watermark technology made great progress. This technique was then widely spread among the people. It was used to print Pu Jian and folk New Year pictures, and became a unique traditional painting reproduction and printing technique in China.
Since its establishment in 1900, Shanghai duoyunxuan has inherited the traditional technique of woodblock watermark.
