Introduction to paper cutting (Quanzhou (Li Yaobao) paper cutting)
Applicant: Quanzhou City, Fujian Province
Quanzhou paper carving began in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty. Every Spring Festival, Lantern Festival and other festive days, every household in Quanzhou cut red and carved green, decorated with lanterns, hung peach charms, pasted tuanhua and red paper on the windows and lintels, showing a kind of ancient and elegant happiness. This custom has continued in the local area until now. Li Yaobao's paper cutting is a typical Quanzhou paper cutting art produced in this environment.
Li Yaobao (1892-1983) was born in Licheng District, Quanzhou City. His father made a living by painting and painting. He was good at making traditional folk patterns and was good at using colors. His brother was good at carving paper. Li Yaobao learned from his father and brother since he was young. Under the influence of his family, with his talent and hard work, he quickly stood out. He not only fully inherited Quanzhou paper-making skills, but also extensively absorbed the nutrition of paper-cut, plastic pile, porcelain paste, wood carving, carving board, architecture, color painting and other arts. He creatively used the techniques of description, cutting, carving and picking to form his own unique paper-making style Art. Li Yaobao's paper carving has expanded the traditional theme of expression. His works include six categories: jubilation, dragon and Phoenix, flowers and birds, and characters. They are rich in content, meaningful in conception, vivid in image, elegant in style, and highly decorative. They pay attention to composition and image. They are powerful and delicate in knife technique, and full of rhythm in lines. They have high aesthetic value.
Quanzhou (Li Yaobao) engraved paper concentrates the essence of Minnan decorative art, and has certain representativeness in Southern Fujian folk art. It enriches the cultural connotation of the local boneless paper material and silk art in Quanzhou. To some extent, it promotes each other with the material and silk lantern art. Under the current situation, the traditional folk customs in Quanzhou are weakening day by day, the folk art market is shrinking, and there is no successor, which makes the development of paper-cut art in Quanzhou difficult, and the endangered situation is becoming more and more serious.
