Introduction to Pudong Storytelling:
Applicant: Pudong New Area, Shanghai
Pudong storytelling originated in Chuansha and Nanhui in Pudong, Shanghai, and later spread throughout the suburbs of Shanghai and Pinghu City, Zhejiang Province. Because the performers beat cymbals with one hand, it is also called "cymbal book", also known as "Hu book" and "farmer book".
Pudong Shuoshu is often sung in Dongxiang dialect of Pudong and Xixiang dialect of Puxi. Its tone is evolved from the "causal tone" of "speaking causation". In addition, it also absorbs the melody of local folk songs and sister music "Da Lianfa". The melody is mainly composed of five parts, and the tune system is divided into Dongxiang tune and Xixiang tune. Dongxiangdiao belongs to zhengdiao, including "dongdiao", "Xidiao", "paodiao", "Niangniang Diao" and "Jidiao", with smooth and soothing melody; xixiandiao belongs to GongDiao, with high and low melody. The first half of the aria is similar to the chanting tune with continuous talking and singing, with more words and less tune. The structure of the melody is single sentence, followed by up and down sentence. The singing rhythm of Pudong storytelling is relatively free, which often changes with the development of the plot and the changes of the characters' emotions, sometimes short and sometimes relaxed. Pudong storytelling is usually performed by sitting alone, usually with props such as wake-up wood, fan and handkerchief; some of them only speak but don't sing, mainly in Pudong and Shanghai dialects. Later, Pudong storytelling also began to talk about the long original, focusing on speaking, a general three hours. After 1949, there appeared various new forms of performance, such as double, multi, group singing and performance singing. In addition to the traditional bibliographies such as Shi gong'an, Bao Gong and Ji Gong, there are modern bibliographies such as Shandong Ma Yongzhen and Huo Yuanjia, and modern bibliographies based on novels such as railway guerrillas and Lin Hai Xue Yuan.
At present, there are few professional storytellers in Pudong, and this folk art is gradually declining, so it is urgent to strengthen the protection and inheritance.
