Song album is commonly known as "Xiaoge album", because it originated in Chaozhou, Guangdong, also known as "Chaozhou song album". It evolved from Tanci and spread around Chaozhou and Zhaoan, Dongshan and Yunxiao in Fujian. According to Buddhist Scripture stories, folk artists in Chaozhou in Tang Dynasty compiled a new Bianwen, which was accompanied by a plucked instrument and played by themselves. Due to many mistakes and omissions in the transcripts of Tanci, folk artists in the Ming and Qing Dynasties reorganized them, then printed them and bound them into a book, which was widely spread among the people. Therefore, it is also called "song book".

After a long period of development, song album has gradually become a folk art form of speaking and singing in Chaozhou Dialect. It has neat rhyme, easy to speak, complete plot and rich artistic charm, and is popular among the people in the region.
