Huimin clay sculpture generally refers to Henan Zhang clay sculpture, locally known as "baby Zhang", which is mainly distributed in Henan Zhang village and its surrounding areas on the South Bank of Shahe River, zaohu Li Township, about 15 miles southwest of Huimin County, Shandong Province.
It is said that Zhang clay sculptures in Henan originated in the early Qing Dynasty. At that time, many immigrants came here to settle down. Some farmers made clay sculptures with local clay to make a living. After a long period of development, Zhang clay sculpture in Henan Province has evolved from several varieties of human, Buddha and animal to several hundred later. Some also install whistles in clay sculptures to make them sound toys, or install springs and leads in clay sculptures to make them activity toys.
The main material of Henan Zhang clay sculpture is Yellow River silt, which can only be completed through more than ten processes, such as ramming mud, making blank, drying, pasting paper, powdering, coloring, opening eyes, gluing, etc. The painting of clay sculptures has multiple faces, and the back is usually simple or not. Most of the colors used are red, pink, green, yellow and purple. Ink and gold lines are used. The strokes are fluent and the lines are concise. It focuses on beautifying and rendering the warm and hot festive atmosphere. Henan Zhang clay sculpture has the characteristics of simple modeling, exquisite workmanship, gorgeous color, prominent image and rich decoration.
Zhang clay sculpture in Henan has a wide range of subjects and rich contents, including opera stories, dolls and animals of various styles, which are closely combined with people's social life. It is not only a folk art for appreciation, but also a toy to increase children's intelligence. Because of its unique aesthetic value and symbolic significance, it is more and more favored by people.
