Shaoxing Pinghu tune, also known as "yuejunnan Ci", is a popular form of folk art in Shaoxing and its surrounding areas in Zhejiang Province. It gets its name because its main tune is Pinghu tune. It is said that this song art was first created in the early Ming Dynasty and formed in the early Qing Dynasty.
Shaoxing Pinghu tune is performed by one person playing the three string rap, mainly singing and sometimes speaking. There are also two, four or six people who specialize in accompaniment, which are called "three grades", "five grades" or "seven grades". The main singing tune is Pinghu tune, which can be divided into coir raincoat score and fine tune. Its programs are divided into two types: Jieshi and huishu. Jieshi is a short aria and huishu is a medium and long one. The traditional programs of Shaoxing Pinghu tune include Gan Luo Ji, Gu Yu Bei, Shuang Yu Diao, Shuang Zhu Feng, biography of white snake, jade dragonfly and Shi Mei Tu.
Pinghu tune has elegant diction, beautiful melody, rich melody, unique style, strong literariness, musicality and artistry. It is the inheritance and development of Jiangnan quyi singing art in Shaoxing in Ming and Qing Dynasties. It plays a very important role in cultivating and improving the cultural literacy of the people in the spreading area.
