Shandong Bangzi, also known as "gaodiao Bangzi", has a history of more than 400 years. It originated from Bangzi opera in Shanshan area. Bangzi entered Shandong Province over Taihang. At first, it was popular in Heze, forming Caozhou Bangzi. Then it went eastward, forming Wenshang Bangzi.
Shandong Bangzi is popular in a wide range, from Linyi on the Bank of the Yellow River in the East, Kaifeng and Zhengzhou in Henan Province in the west, Xuzhou in Jiangsu Province, Fuyang and Bengbu in Anhui Province in the south, and Daming County and Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province in the north. Shandong Bangzi in Shandong Province is centered on Heze City and covers Jining, Tai'an and other counties and cities.
Shandong Bangzi's singing music belongs to banqiang style, with complicated Banque and Qupai. His singing is not only vivid but also plain, with the characteristics of high pitched and unrestrained, vigorous, graceful and harmonious, open and bright style. The performance program is rich and standard, paying attention to skills, rough action, exaggerated posture. The performance of each profession has its own characteristics, which are unique and colorful.
There are more than 1000 operas of Shandong Bangzi, and more than 600 of them are often performed, including a number of basic operas known as "the old eighteen books", "the seventeen mountains" and "the twelve passes", most of which are based on folklore and historical stories. After the 1950s, some traditional operas, such as "the story of the wall" and "two wolf mountains", have been reorganized and adapted to become the classic operas of Shandong Bangzi, and a number of newly created modern operas have also appeared on the stage during this period.
