Tangqiao town is adjacent to Sutong Yangtze River Bridge in the East, along the expressway along the river in the south, Xitong Expressway and suyuzhang first-class highway in the west, and the golden waterway of the Yangtze River in the north. National Highway 204 runs through the north and south, provincial highway 338 runs across the East and West. Three railways, namely Hutong, tongsujia intercity and Yanjiang intercity, meet here and set up hub stations. Hutong railway is under construction. The town has a total area of 94.27 square kilometers (2017) and a total population of 155360 people (2017). It has 2 offices, 5 community neighborhood committees and 14 village committees.
In 2017, it won the fifth consecutive title of "national civilized town". On October 8, 2018, it was selected as one of the top 1000 towns with comprehensive strength in China in 2018. In 2018, the national health county (township) was reconfirmed. On September 11, 2019, it will be selected as "top 100 comprehensive competitiveness of Chinese towns in 2018". On October 8, 2019, it will be selected into the top 100 towns of China's top 1000 comprehensive strength in 2019.
Evolution of organizational system
According to the research on the ancient cultural sites of Qinglong village in Tangqiao, there were human activities 5000 years ago. At the end of the Shang Dynasty, Taibo and Zhongyong (Yuzhong) of the Zhou nationality came from the south of Zhouyuan in Northern Shaanxi and built Gouwu. Tangqiao belonged to Gouwu. In the Western Zhou Dynasty, it belonged to the state of Wu. in 473 BC, Yue destroyed Wu and entered Yue. In 333 BC, Chu destroyed Yue and Tangqiao belonged to Chu. the first emperor of Qin unified China and built prefectures and counties. Tangqiao belonged to Wuxian County, Kuaiji county. The Western Han Dynasty belonged to Yu township of Wu County, while the Eastern Han Dynasty belonged to Nansha township of Wu County. Haiyu county was established in the fourth year of Taikang (283) in the Western Jin Dynasty, and Tangqiao belonged to Haiyu county. in the seventh year of Xiankang in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (341), Nansha county was set up and Tangqiao belonged to it. In 540, Changshu county was built in Nansha. Tangqiao belonged to Changshu County, which was built in Sui and Tang Dynasties. In the Five Dynasties, Tangqiao belonged to qianliu, the king of Wuyue, and in the Song Dynasty, it still belonged to Changshu county. in the first year of Yuanzhen (1290), Changshu county was upgraded to Changshu state, and Tangqiao belonged to Changshu state. In 1369, Changshu was still reduced to a county. Tangqiao belonged to Chongsu township of Changshu County, which was caused by the Qing Dynasty. At the beginning of the Republic of China, Changshu county was divided into 35 townships, and Tangqiao belonged to Tangqiao township of Changshu county. This is the first time that a township has been set up in the territory. in 1929, the township system of Changshu county was abolished and divided into districts. Tangqiao is the Fourth District of Changshu county. During the period of the Japanese puppet regime (1937-1945), Tangqiao belonged to the Ninth District of Changshu county. The territory is divided into Tangqiao, Hanshan, Luyang (part), Anzhuang, Huangqiao, Lianpu, Linjing and huanshui. In the 35th year of the Republic of China, the township was merged. Hanshan, Huangqiao, Linjing and Luyang (part) were merged into Tangqiao Township and renamed Tangqiao town; huanshui Township and Anzhuang Township were merged into Changshou township; Lianpu township was merged into Qing'an Township, all belonging to the Fourth District of Changshu county. On April 22, 1949, Tangqiao was liberated and still belongs to Changshu county. There are nine guarantees for Tangqiao Township and Santang, Luyuan, Xinzhuang, Changshou township. In February 1950, the Baojia system was abolished and a new village was established. The territory consists of all the three townships of Tangqiao, flood control and Huangqiao, most of Xintang Township, part of Wujiao Township and two villages of democratic and Fanshen townships. A total of 47 administrative villages were built, including 276 natural villages and two market towns. In 1956, the four townships of Tangqiao, flood control, Xintang, Huangqiao and Wujiao were merged into Tangqiao township. The three administrative villages of Tangqiao town, including Jiecun, Zhendong and Zhennan, were divided into Tangqiao town, which belongs to Tangqiao district. In 1957, Tangqiao district was withdrawn and Tangqiao town was incorporated into Tangqiao township; in September of the same year, Xinlong village of Fanshen township was included; in September 1958, ZhuangQiao village of Minzhu township was included. On October 1, 1958, Tangqiao people's commune was established, and a management committee was set up to implement the integration of government and society. Shazhou county was established in 1962, and Tangqiao was changed to Shazhou county. On April 17, 1983, the Management Committee of the people's commune was removed and the Tangqiao Township People's government was established. The production teams were changed into administrative villages and the production teams into villagers' groups. On March 11, 1986, with the approval of the Jiangsu Provincial People's government, Tangqiao township was abolished and Tangqiao town was established to implement the village management system. In December of this year, Shazhou county was removed and Zhangjiagang City was built. Tangqiao belongs to Zhangjiagang City. The administrative system and subordinate relationship remain unchanged.

The people of Tangqiao are mainly engaged in farming, with generations of settlers in the majority. In history, a small number of businessmen moved to Tangqiao from northern Jiangsu and Zhejiang and settled down. At the same time, a small number of young women from northern Jiangsu married and moved to Tangqiao. In March 1960, in response to the call of the motherland to support the socialist construction in the border areas, 169 male and female members of the commune moved to Xinjiang. In 1949, the population was 18100. After 1953, the population was divided into urban and rural hukou. In 1990, the fourth national census found that there were two Hani people and three Tujia people in the territory. As of November 2015, the total population of Tong Qiao town was nearly 200 thousand, of which 90 thousand were registered residence. as of 2017, there are 155360 permanent residents in the town (township).

The annual average sunshine duration is 2088 hours, accounting for 47% of the total sunshine hours. The average annual precipitation is 1034.3 mm, and the average annual rainy day is 125 days. The annual average temperature is 15.12 ℃, the average temperature in January is 2.7 ℃, and the average temperature in July is 27.5 ℃. The wind direction is southeast in summer and northwest in winter. There are transit typhoons at the turn of summer and autumn, with an average of 1.9 times a year.

There are 24283.6 hectares of construction land in the city, including 21736.73 hectares of residential and industrial land, 1980.4 hectares of traffic land and 586.47 hectares of water conservancy facilities land. There are 27917.8 hectares of unused land in the city, including 26555.73 hectares of river water. water resource
Tangqiao town is rich in water resources. The storage capacity of surface water is 250 million cubic meters in wet year and 220 million cubic meters in medium dry year. The annual water diversion from the Yangtze River is 480 million cubic meters, and the annual utilization of groundwater is 12.5 million cubic meters. there are abundant water resources in the water area. The water area is 5679 mu, accounting for 15.07% of the total area. Xiputang, qinglongtang, sanzhangpu, huangsipu and huamiaohe are all connected with the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake. The annual average water level (above Wusong zero) is 3 meters. The annual precipitation is 1095 mm. There are 45 deep wells, with an annual static water level of 21 meters, a well depth of 115-120 meters, and an aquifer of 80 meters, which has remained stable for 10 years. One hour pumping capacity of each deep well is 80 tons. Calculated by pumping 10 hours a day, the annual total water output is 13.14 million tons, and the per capita water output of the whole town is 476 tons.

Tangqiao town is rich in mineral resources, and the main mineral products discovered are: sand, brick, clay, mineral water, coal, natural gas, etc. Among them, the proven reserves are about 60 million tons of sand and stone, about 20.1 million tons of coal, about 80 million cubic meters of natural gas and about 80 million tons of mineral water.
