There are different street location names in many areas, among which the more famous one is Jiefang Road in Heping District of Tianjin
Before the founding of the people's Republic of China
As early as the end of the Qing Dynasty, Zhongjie (Jiefang Road, formerly known as Jiefang Road) became a "geomantic treasure land" for foreign financiers by virtue of its proximity to laolongtou railway station (Tianjin station, formerly known as Jiefang Road) and Haihe wharf. In 1882, the British Bank of Hong Kong took the lead in breaking the ground to build here, followed by France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia. It opened the Sino Russian Dao Sheng Bank, Macquarie Bank, Zhengjin bank, industrial and Commercial Bank of China and France, and gradually became the concentration of foreign banks. The luxurious foreign buildings symbolized the growth of foreign financial capital in Tianjin. These banks have strong capital and great influence, and they control the financial industry of Tianjin and even North China.
After the founding of the people's Republic of China
After the founding of the people's Republic of China, Zhongjie street was renamed Jiefang Road. Due to the unified management of the financial industry by the state, most of the banks, Jindian bank and stock exchanges were cancelled. In recent years, with the progress of reform and opening up, Tianjin municipal government has implemented the design of rebuilding Jiefang Road Financial Street.
Walking along Jiefang Road, there are many western buildings with unique shapes on both sides of the street, which bring us rich exotic style - Roman style, Gothic style, Roman style, Germanic style, Russian classical style and other European style buildings, which come in droves and make us dizzying.
Jiefang North Road starts from Jiefang Bridge in the northwest and ends at Xuzhou Road in the southeast to Jiefang South Road. It is 2229 meters long and was known as Tianjin's "Wall Street" before liberation. For a long time, this street has been a concentration of foreign banks. The Opium War opened the door of the Qing government's seclusion, and Jiefang Road became a British concession, which was called "Zhongjie". From jiefangqiao to Yingkou Road is the "great French road" of the French concession, from Yingkou Road to Xuzhou road is the "Victoria Road" of the British concession, and from Xuzhou Road to Qiongzhou road is the "Wilson road" of the German concession. HSBC (today's Tianjin Branch of Bank of China) took the lead in the construction here, followed by France, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia, which successively opened the Bank of macalli (today's post and telecommunications office on Jiefang North Road), Citibank of the United States (today's Tianjin branch of Agricultural Bank of China), industrial and Commercial Bank of China and France (today's Municipal Federation of trade unions), Russo China Bank (today's 132 Jiefang North Road), Japan Bank Yokohama Zhengjin Bank (today's Bank of China Tianjin Branch), Oriental Bank (today's Art Museum), American Meifeng Bank (today's Changjiang garment factory), etc. In addition, many famous foreign firms are also located in this street, such as Swire (now No. 165 Jiefang North Road), Jardine Matheson (now Tianjin Branch of China Construction Bank), Renji (now No. 129-135 Jiefang North Road), Meifeng (now Wujinjiaodian company), etc.
The style of the building
Although the financial buildings gathered here have different shapes, the overall style adopts western classical Renaissance techniques, showing a solemn and stable atmosphere. For example, there is a gable at the entrance of the building of HSBC, the colonnade is protruding, and there are tall Ionic columns on both sides for decoration, which makes it grand and solemn. Japan Yokohama Zhengjin bank building, designed and constructed by Tonghe Engineering Co., Ltd., the two-story facade is completely symmetrical, using the form of Collins column, which is magnificent. Macquarie Bank building, designed by Jingming company, is a parallelogram. It pursues grand and magnificent style and gives people a sense of stability and solemnity. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and France is designed and constructed by Yonghe construction company. The facade of the main building along the street, with the main entrance as the center, is symmetrically arranged on both sides along the arc line to form the front porch with 10 new Colin columns. The shape of the front porch is Roman TASS type. The proportion of the two-story colonnades is very different, forming a strong contrast, which makes the building facade very rich.
