The total area is 189 square kilometers. In 2018, the permanent population of Shajing Town was 37453.

Shajing Town is named after Shajing village where the town government is located. In 1953, Shajing township was established. In 1961, Shajing commune was established. In 1966, it was renamed Xiangdong commune. In 1970, the original name was restored. In 1983, it was changed into Shajing township. In 1997, the township was removed and the town was built. In 2004, Xiaohe township was merged into Shajing Town. In June 2020, Shajing Town governs 28 administrative villages.
