During the Xianfeng Period, six small islands were formed. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the people of Changxing took the responsibility of filling the river and damming the six small islands. The island has a marine climate. Due to the temperature regulation of the surrounding water, it is humid and cool in summer, mild in winter, well-balanced rain, fresh air, sufficient light and four distinct seasons.
On the South Bank of Changxing Island, there is a deep water coastline of nearly 20 kilometers, with a depth of 12 to 16 meters, a maximum depth of 22 meters and a width of about 1000 meters. With stable water regime and no sediment deposition, it is suitable for the construction of wharf, port machinery, shipbuilding, ship repair and logistics transfer base. It can dock 300000 DWT ships and has convenient access, which has laid a solid foundation for the development of marine equipment industry in Changxing. New development
The transportation between Changxing Island and the mainland is convenient. The water passenger transportation between majiagang and Wusong is carried by the ferry and car ferry of Changxing passenger station. The daily normal flights are 25 passenger trips and 5 car ferry trips, including 2 passenger trips and 1 car ferry, leading to Hengsha Island to bring passengers back and forth. details
Historical evolution
Changxing Island is a sandbank formed by sediment deposited in the estuary of the Yangtze River. It is about 20 km long from east to west and 14 km wide from north to south, with a land forming area of 88 square kilometers. It is located in the South Branch of the Yangtze River Estuary and divides the South Branch into two ports.
Changxing Island is composed of sandbanks, mainly including yawo sand, shitousha, Ruifeng sand, panjiasha, Yuanyuan sand, Jindai sand, etc. 700 years ago, Changxing Island was an underwater sandbank. In 1644, the area of yawo sand was 2.20 square kilometers in 1844, and that of chongbao sand was 7.20 square kilometers. After more than 100 years of siltation, the area of yawo sand has expanded to 14 square kilometers, becoming the main body of Changxing Island. Chongbaosha, located to the west of yawosha, had an area of 13.70 square kilometers by 1860. In 1880, chongbaosha was divided into three small sands, namely ruifengsha, shitousha and xiaoshitousha. The small stone sand soon collapsed into the river. In 1842, the area of stone sand was nearly 20 square kilometers. By the early 20th century, the sand body was shrinking. In 1854, the round sand covered an area of 1.4 square kilometers. It was located 5km southeast of yawosha. Due to the influence of tidal current, the sand body first moved to the northwest, close to yawosha, and then moved to the southeast, far away from yawosha. In the middle of the 20th century, the area of sandbanks expanded to 14 square kilometers. The area of annuity belt sand in 1919 is 5 square kilometers, which is located in the east of yawo sand, and then expanded to 7.50 square kilometers. In 1924, panjiasha covered an area of 9 square kilometers. It is located in the east of shitousha and the northwest of yawosha, with obvious erosion and collapse. In 1950, its area was reduced to 5-6 square kilometers.
These sandbodies formed Changxing Island in the 1960s and early 1970s after artificial branch blocking.
During the reign of Daoguang in Qing Dynasty, six sandbanks became land one after another. In 2005, Changxing Township was transferred from Baoshan District to Chongming County. In October 2009, the municipal government approved the establishment of Changxing town.
Changxing Island is about 31 km long from east to west and 2-4 km wide from north to south. Its current area is about 155 square kilometers, of which the area of Qingcaosha Reservoir is about 67 square kilometers. The people's Government of Changxing town governs 24 administrative villages and Qianwei farm covers an area of about 13 square kilometers. The current situation of the island is about 120 thousand people, of whom 40 thousand are registered residence and 80 thousand are migrants.
The current situation of Changxing Island is mainly citrus planting, with a planting area of 20 square kilometers, known as the "hometown of Citrus". Since 2002, large state-owned enterprises such as Zhenhua heavy industry, China Shipbuilding phase I and China shipping industry have settled down on the South Bank of Changxing Island. In 2008, the industrial output value reached 37 billion yuan.
On October 31, 2009, the Yangtze River Tunnel Bridge was completed and opened to traffic. Changxing Island has become the "bridgehead" connecting Chongming islands, Central Jiangsu and Northern Jiangsu. Changxing Island is only 30 minutes' drive from the center of Shanghai.
