History and culture
Hanzhong East Tower
Hanzhong East Tower, also known as Jingming temple tower, is located in Dongguan Street, Hantai District, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province. It is located in the Jingming Temple of Dongguan main street. It is a landmark building of Hanzhong in the old times. It once formed one of the "Eight Sights" in Hanzhong with Yinma pool, and is called "East Tower and West shadow". The brick pagoda of the Southern Song Dynasty has a square eaves.
Jingming temple was rebuilt in 1375 and rebuilt in Qing Dynasty. In the second half of the 20th century, Dongta primary school was rebuilt. It was repaired in 2000 and restored to the temple pattern. It is composed of front hall, back hall and East and West Wing rooms, with a construction area of 720 square meters. The pagoda was built in the Qingyuan period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1195-1200), and has been repaired by later generations. It was originally level 13. In 1953, the collapsed top two levels were removed and the tower brake was restored.
At present, the tower is of Grade 11, with a residual height of 16.5 meters and a bottom edge length of 4.37 meters. The bottom layer of the tower is very high, with a gate on the front and a small square room inside, about 3 meters high (now blocked). The above layers are solid, and the height and width are reduced layer by layer. A row of water caltrop teeth were applied under the eaves. On the second floor and above, there are niches in the middle of the four sides, with a brick built in (it should have been worshipped), and a single-layer Pavilion style small square tower on both sides of the niches. The top of the tower is in a round shape, with a bottle type tower brake. The east side of the ground floor is inlaid with one side of xiuta Jie built in 1953. During the maintenance in 1953, a pair of iron lions with pressing angle was found on the top of the tower (part of the heavenly palace), which was engraved with the words "Li zizhao jingshe, West Street of Yangzhou City in the fourth year of Qingyuan period" of the Southern Song Dynasty, providing material evidence for determining the construction age of the tower. Yangzhou, that is, Yangxian County in Hanzhong City today (it was the seat of Yangzhou in Tang Dynasty). In addition, the inscription "Liang" can be seen on the bricks of the pagoda. In the Western Jin Dynasty, the Southern Dynasties, the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Hanzhong and its surrounding areas were all "Liangzhou". Maybe the temple and pagoda were built in the Tang Dynasty or before the Tang Dynasty. Now the pagoda is rebuilt in the Southern Song Dynasty, using part of the old bricks of the original pagoda. The typical features of the tower are as follows: a single-layer Pavilion style small square tower is built on both sides of the niches on each floor, which is not seen in the song tower in Guanzhong, but it can be seen in the small wild goose pagoda of the Tang Dynasty (small square towers are decorated on both sides of the north and south windows on the fifth to eleventh floors). This situation deserves researchers' attention.
In 1995, the tower was maintained, and in 2000, the temple hall was repaired.
In May 1957, the people's Committee of Shaanxi Province announced "Hanzhong East Tower" as the second batch of cultural relics protection units in Shaanxi Province.
In April 1992, the people's Government of Shaanxi Province changed its name from "Hanzhong East Tower" to "Hanzhong East Tower", and announced the scope of protection. The key protected area is centered on the tower, with Dongta primary school office in the East, Dongta primary school teachers' dormitory in the West and Dongta primary school teachers' dormitory in the south
