Gancheng Township
Gancheng township is located 110 kilometers east of Haiyuan County, adjacent to Maojing Township, Huan County, Gansu Province in the East, zhangjiayuan Township, Tongxin County in the north, Qiying town and Tanshan Township in the West and south, respectively. With a total area of 228.15 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 13 village committees and a total population of 6052 (2017). Provincial Highway 203 and pangan highway pass through the countryside. The total cultivated land is 95815 mu, and the area of returning farmland to forest is 48915.9 mu, 4.3 mu per capita. Gancheng township has a complex terrain, with an average altitude of 1700 meters. It is a typical Eastern Loess Hilly and gully region, with a temperate semi-arid climate. It has nine droughts in ten years, with annual rainfall of 300 mm and evaporation of 2000 mm. With frequent natural disasters, it is one of the driest villages in the central arid zone. It belongs to the old, young, frontier and poor areas, and is the main battlefield of poverty alleviation and development.
In December 2017, it was named as the seventh batch of demonstration towns for national unity and progress.

Historical evolution
In May 1953, Gancheng township was established. In October 1958, it was changed into Shuangjing commune. In January 1983, Shuangjing commune was renamed Gancheng commune. In November 1983, Gancheng township was established. In July 2003, Gaotai Township and Gancheng Township were merged into Gancheng Township, covering an area of 241.3 square kilometers. In May 2008, Gancheng township was put under the jurisdiction of Haiyuan county. In July 2008, Gancheng Township, Yuanzhou District, Guyuan city was officially under the jurisdiction of Haiyuan County, Zhongwei city. Most of Gancheng township (Gancheng Township before Township merger) and the northern part of Tanshan township are under the jurisdiction of Haiyuan County, while the southern part of Gancheng township (Gaotai Township before Township merger) can be merged into Tanshan township. After the adjustment, Gancheng township has a total area of 228.15 square kilometers, 13 village committees and a total population of 6052 (2017).
