Historical evolution
It was named because the town government was located in the land of melon fields in ancient times.
It belonged to Huazhou in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
After the first year of the Republic of China (1912), it was Guapo Township in Hua county.
In May 1949, it was called Guapo district.
In April 1956, it was changed to Guapo township.
In September 1958, the red flag commune was established.
In January 1959, it was the Guapo administrative area of Huazhou commune in Weinan county.
In September 1961, it was subordinate to Guapo commune in Huaxian county.
In 1984, Guapo town was established.
In December 2001, Dongzhao township was merged into Guapo town.

Nansha site
The Nansha site is located in Nansha village, Guapo Town, Huazhou District, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province. In 1958 and 1983, the archaeological team of Xi'an Banpo Museum successively cleaned up Yangshao culture, Longshan culture and Erlitou culture sites here. It is also a site from Neolithic Age to Shang Dynasty, which provides important material for the study of Shang Dynasty history. Qiaoshang bridge is located on the West Chishui River in Chishui Town, Huaxian county. It is composed of two layers of arch and bridge deck. The lower bridge was built in 1660, the sixth year of Kangxi (1667). The upper bridge was built in 1832, Xuanzong (1832). It is a well protected ancient double stone bridge, which also provides certain scientific research value for Chinese bridge construction .
On May 3, 2013, Nansha site was listed as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council.
