Chegu township is located in mountainous area with a long history. It was set up in Han and Tang Dynasties. In Dali of Song Dynasty, it belonged to the remote part of Yinhe county. In Yuan Dynasty, it belonged to Yuanjiang road. In Ming Dynasty, it belonged to Yuanjiang County. In Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Yuanjiang Zhili Prefecture. In Ming Dynasty, it belonged to Yuanjiang County. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, it was divided into Honghe County from Yuanjiang in July 1954 and Chegu Township from Langdi commune in 1981. There are Hani, Yi and Yao people living in the territory. Hani people are divided into two branches: Yiche and haninuo.
