Dapingchang town is located in the middle of Songtao Miao Autonomous County, connecting Taiping Township in the East, Pingtou Township in the south, Mengxi town in the west, miaoei Township in the north and Jiujiang Township in the south. The town covers an area of 62.8 square kilometers, with 852 hectares of arable land, including 528 hectares of farmland. It has jurisdiction over 1 neighborhood committee, 18 villages and 157 villager groups, with a total population of 23569 at the end of 2007, including 856 non-agricultural population and 10.5% minority population.

The territory is hilly landform, with an average height of 450 meters. There are two major rivers flowing through the town, with a total length of 15500 meters, a usable natural fall of 9 meters, a water and energy resource reserve of 3.6 million kilowatts, a usable consumption of 3.6 million kilowatts, and a developed utilization of 360 kilowatts. There are 22 large and small reservoirs in the town, with water capacity of 249.5 cubic meters. The climate is subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. There is a Diye River Hydropower Station in the town, and a dalongqiao reservoir fish farm, which is the largest, well-equipped and covers an area of more than 100 mu in the county. The town's headquarters catch up with the third and eighth markets of the lunar calendar. The Songyin highway goes around the street.
