Originally located in niuniuba village, 1640 meters above sea level, it is a small flat dam at the confluence of Meigu River and lianzhalo river. According to legend: Once upon a time, there was a Yi woman named Niuniu who first settled here. Most passers-by took a rest here, so she was named after her. The rural area is bordered by zogeyida Township in the East, Erku and zhuku Township in the south, Erhe Township in the West and kalaiyigan Township in the north. The township covers an area of 39.33 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over niuniuba, abojue, tengdi, texinaituo, erjiekae, Erqu, mahejue, Niannian, MITI, youmuhe, abojue, rekou, ague, sibiqi, and 4E, 14 villages and 84 villager groups, with a total of 3410 households and 17520 people, including 17380 of Yi nationality, accounting for 96.9%; 136 of Han nationality, 1 of Tibetan nationality, and 3 of Manchu nationality.
In May 1956, the township was established and the rural labor association was established. In January 1957, the Township People's Committee was established. In October 1958, the people's commune was established. In 1961, the commune was closed and the Township People's Committee was restored; in April 1968, the Township Reform Committee was established. The commune was rebuilt in 1972. On July 12, 1981, the commune reform committee was changed into the management committee. In July 1984, the township system was restored and the township government was established. In 1989, the township government office was relocated, with an altitude of 1550 meters.
On January 12, 2021, the people's Government of Sichuan Province decided to abolish Niuba Township and establish Niuba town. The administrative area of niuniuba township is the administrative area of niuniuba town. The people's Government of niuniuba town is located at No. 36 Erqian street, erjiekae village.
In 1990, the total agricultural output value of the township was 1186700 yuan (504000 yuan for agriculture, 69700 yuan for forestry, 510000 yuan for animal husbandry, 103000 yuan for sideline and fishery); the area of cultivated land was 4545 mu, and the total grain output was 1539000 kg. It mainly produces corn, potato, adopted son, pepper, walnut and pear. There are 2251 cattle, 36 Buffalo, 76 horses, 4080 pigs, 1177 goats and 917 sheep. There are 1 commercial purchasing and marketing group and 1 Bank Credit Union in the township, 4 rural primary schools with 162 students, 1 health center and 1 medical staff.
