In 1933, there was Gushan Township, which belongs to Longshan County. In January 1958, Jiashan and Guzhai were established. In 1960, two communes, Jiashan and Guzhai, were established and later merged into Guzhai commune. In 1962, Guzhai commune was changed into Guzhai district. In 1969, Guzhai district was transformed into Guzhai commune. In 1984, Guzhai commune was changed into Guzhai Yao township. As of June 2020, Guzhai Yao township has jurisdiction over one community and eight administrative villages. The Township People's government is located in Guzhai street, Guzhai village.
