According to textual research, he was the leader of Hongbing, a peasant uprising subordinate to Chaozhou Prefecture, East tiandihui Road, Guangdong Province in the late Qing Dynasty. Since Jiaqing and Daoguang, the Qing Dynasty has suffered from political corruption, internal and external difficulties, and peasant uprisings have occurred one after another. At that time, wherever the volunteers went, they destroyed the government offices, opened prisons for prisoners, opened warehouses for the poor, and punished corrupt officials, cruel officials and evil gentry. In the fourth year of Xianfeng (1854), Chen niangkang and Zheng Youchun of Meihua Township gathered at Chendian market to raise the banner of "loyalty, righteousness and good will". In the early morning of March 22, hundreds of volunteers took the thick fog to rush into the west gate of Chaoyang County and straight into the guerrilla office. County Magistrate Wang ordered the city gate to be closed and Li Conglong led his officers and soldiers to resist and launch fireworks. After the fierce war, more and more volunteers retreated from the suburbs. In April, Wu Junwen, the prefect of Chaozhou, asked Yingbao, the Deputy General of Huizhou Association, and Zhang Kun, the inspector general of Chengsi, to go to Chaoyang to suppress. Yingbao fought fiercely, Zhang Shan led the troops to Chaoyang, Wu Jun stationed troops in Xiashan, Yingbao and Zhang Kun pioneered the suppression. On April 14, Chen niangkang led the crowd to attack and lure the enemy into muddy fields in dabushang and Xiacun areas of simapu. Then he ambushed four times and defeated nearly 10 leaders, including Yingbao, zhangkun, Foreign Affairs Commission, Qianzong and bazong. Wu all retreated to Chaoyang County. Chen niangkang seized dachanglong, Xiashan, simapu, Shijing, Sangtian, Meihua and Shalong. On April 27, Chen niangkang marched into the county town and fought fiercely. The officers and soldiers of Shuangwang were defeated and retreated into the city. On the 29th, the rebels stationed in the southwest of the city. On the third night of May, the rebels placed gunpowder at Nanmen bridge, which could not be detonated in the rain. They mounted a ladder to climb the city again and were shot back by the officers and soldiers. On the morning of the fourth day of the lunar new year, the volunteers attacked the city in two ways. The East Road crossed the red bridge and killed Cai ya, a soldier of Dongxiang Township in Lingling. They approached bagongchi, and the North Road occupied wanglouling, and then marched into Beitan. The soldiers on the East Road set off Baizi guns at bagongchi and Huizhou gun raising team failed to attack the city. The soldiers on the North Road retreated because they were blocked by Houxi soldiers and gun raising team. A few days later, the volunteers gathered more than 10000 people in Shigang mountain to besiege Chaoyang City again and divide their forces to attack Huilai. On May 12, the rebel army captured Huilai County, captured magistrate sun Tingying, guerrilla sun Dingjia and Jiaoyu Peng Ruilong, and executed them on the spot. The rebels opened warehouses to help the poor, punished the evil gentry, and solved the grievances for the people. When the rebel army passed by Huahu Lake in Huilai, they saw a big man detaining a remarried young woman. They thought that she had violated the clan rules and was executed. So they stopped and publicized the three obedience and four virtues, which were against the heaven's way of living. They should abolish them and release the young woman in public. Then the uprising of Xu Amei in the north mountain of Puning responded, and the volunteers on Chaozhou East Road were surging. In June, Chen niangkang died in the army.
