Botang town is subordinate to BOLUO County, Guangdong Province. It is located in the northeast of Boluo County, 130 km away from Guangzhou in the southwest, 96 km away from Shenzhen Special Zone, bordering Yangcun and Taimei in the East, Xiangtoushan in the south, Huzhen and Henghe in the West.
The total area of Botang town is 255.78 square kilometers (2017), including 48600 mu of cultivated land and 200000 mu of mountainous area, with a forest coverage rate of 63%. By the end of 2013, the town had two communities, 36 administrative villages and 52061 permanent residents (2017).

Evolution of organizational system
Botang was first built in 1629, the second year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty. There were several large ponds around the market town, and there was an ancient cypress beside the pond, so it was named Botang. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was under the jurisdiction of Suzhou patrol department.
In 1938, it belonged to Siwei Township, the Fifth District of Boluo county.
In October 1949, Botang township was built, belonging to the second district.
In July 1952, it was transferred to the fourth district.
In October 1955, Botang district was established.
In November 1956, the district was withdrawn and the township was merged.
In October 1958, Baitang people's commune was established.
In 1961, it was divided into three communes: Botang, Ping'an and Boxin.
